COMMENT - Michael Shepherd - June 6, 2008
During the recent Capreol Youth Artsfest drama workshop I saw some encouraging signs of emerging young dramatic talent. Talent which I felt should be encouraged to flourish. I decided to write a play for them. This gave me a bit of a problem as all but one of the young actors attending the workshop were young females. One young lad amongst twelve females. A bit of a poser for me. As often happens in the creative process something “popped” into my head. The book “Little Women.”

I read two versions of Louisa May Alcott’s classic and thought it too long and a bit archaic to stage it. But the essence of the story, familial love in the face of personal disaster, shone through like a beacon.

So, “But the Greatest of These” was born.

As is usual during new play development, myself and a company of young actors are working on polishing the script and we will be presenting it at a public reading on Tuesday, June 24th, at Trinity United Church, Capreol. Doors open at 7.30 p.m. with the reading starting at 7.45p.m. There will be no admission charge but we encourage cash donations at the door, in aid of the Mission and Service Fund.

We are very fortunate to have six very talented people share their talents with us. They are, in order of appearance;

Kendalyn Langis as Jody

Daniel Moir as Jamie

Eden Osmar as Maggie

Caitlin Monzon as Millie

Dana Monzon as Mrs. Jarvis

Hailey Ireland as Ashley

Your support in promoting this event would be very much appreciated. For those not familiar with the concept of a staged reading it means that there will be no set, props, costumes or lights. The actors will present the work as a radio play. The reading will take approximately one hour. Being in front of a live audience will be greatly encouraging to the young actors and the old playwright. Salaam, Michael Shepherd.
